The Local Setting
Iona House is located in El Dorado County, just outside the rural community of Placerville, California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s. The Placerville area offers a variety of outdoor activities for those who visit. El Dorado County is famous, historically as the place that began the 1849 gold rush (nearby in Coloma, just a few miles from Placerville).
Four Distinct Seasons
At approximately 2400 feet elevation, Iona House experiences all four seasons.
In the winter, there are 4-5 snowstorms a year leaving up to 6 inches (which quickly melts), followed by a beautiful spring filled with blossoms and growth. Summer days can range from mild to hot (though not usually as hot as the valley). Perhaps the most beautiful season of all is autumn with leaves changing and crisp nights.
The Immediate Surroundings
The campus of Iona House is located off of a major county road a short distance from restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, and a hospital. While you will feel like you’re in a very remote place when on campus, in reality you’re only a short drive from all that civilization has to offer.
Agricultural Setting
Iona House is situated within a rural, agricultural community of the sierra foothills neighboring an area known as Apple Hill which features over 100 locally run orchards, vineyards, and farms. The agricultural setting of Iona House is not accidental to our mission and vision. In the monastic tradition, work (physical labor) is an essential component of daily life within the community and is seen as vital for the spiritual formation of every inhabitant.
