A Personal Retreat
Cultivating sacred space and sacred time to abide in Christ
A personal retreat can be a life transforming experience. Modern life is teeming with distraction and noise that prevents us from getting to the places of depth and reflection and spiritual openness that we desire. A personal retreat is an invitation to put away work, domestic obligations, and all distraction in order to enter into silence, solitude, and stillness before God.

Monday - This is a quiet day. There are no structured activities or prayer times. It's a great day to practice extended silence & solitude.
Note that Fr. Ryan & Elizabeth are not available to meet with guests on Monday as it is their day off and they are not on campus.
Tuesday-Saturday - schedule is as follows:
Morning Prayer - 9am
Work/Serving Projects - participating in the care of the land (guests are encouraged but not required to participate in the work aspects. Many guests find the simple manual labor to be helpful to their retreat experience.)
Midday Prayer - noon
Study, rest, or joining the Residents in additional work projects (if so desired)
3:00-4:30 - quiet campus (no work)
4:30 - Evening Prayer
Sometimes the opportunity to experience a shared meal with other guests or the Residents may present itself
Spiritual Direction and/or Confession by appointment.
Friday Evening: Friday Night Feast - all are welcome to join a community BBQ on the back deck of the barn (or inside if weather is inclement)
Sunday - Sunday is a quiet day on campus with minimal activities (mostly animal feedings, etc.). Guests are encouraged to visit a local church. All guests are warmly invited to attend All Saints Church (Fr. Ryan is the rector and a number of our volunteers / residents attend there).

A personal retreat holds many possibilities. Here are some of the practices you might consider:
Silence & Solitude
Study
Scripture reading
Journaling
Practice of Examen
Fasting
Cooking a great meal that you enjoy
Taking long walks
Naps and good nights sleep
Serving in the garden or doing other manual labor
Meeting with a Spiritual Director or doing confession with a priest
Helping with animal feedings
Living into the rhythm of thrice daily worship/prayer offered on campus
A personal retreat is an opportunity to explore the deep places in your soul and to reflect on life’s meaning and priorities, to engage God. If desired, it can be a time to meet a few fellow pilgrims on the journey of faith and experience a shared sense of camaraderie together. All of these are possible at Iona House.

A major goal of Iona House is to provide a spiritually vibrant place for personal retreats: a place to reimagine all of life in reference to Christ.
We have designed every aspect of the campus with this in mind. The entire ecosystem of Iona House exists to encourage and support spiritual disciplines and ancient Christian practices that will best allow you to practice abiding in Christ (John 15).
Our ecosystem provides the following aspects:
A communal rhythm of prayer to structure your day around; a prayerbook to assist you
Sacred space to pray
A library for research and study (if desired)
Trails to walk in nature undisturbed in silence
A working farm to experience the agrarian metaphors of scripture and in which you can participate if that would be helpful
Suggested retreat plans / schedules for how to structure your personal retreat (whether that is a 1-day, 2-day, 3-day or extended retreat experience).
Spiritual Direction with a qualified spiritual director and/or Private Confession with a priest (as desired)
Lodging (with restroom, shower, kitchen) where you can have privacy

You may request dates when you fill out the form below.
We require a two-night minimum for overnight stays at this time. Many of our guests have told us that 3-5 nights is needed to really experience the fullness of the rhythm of life that allows for meeting God and substantial transformation. A secondary benefit of a 2-night minimum is that it is a better use of our financial resources (as turning a house for each guest requires full cleaning and laundry services).
Coming soon we plan to offer "prayer huts" (minimalist hermitage cabins) that will be available for 1-night stays for those who can only afford a 24 hour visit. Stay tuned! Targeting Fall 2024.
Day use retreats are also available. When you request a personal retreat, please clarify if you are looking for overnight capacity or just day use in the form below. Thank you!
*If you need to cancel an overnight stay, please tell us as soon as you can. We completely understand that life happens! We often have a wait-list and this will allow us to move other guests into your spot if we can.
