Garden Growth and a GIANT Swing

This year has been a year of lots of growth and development in the Village Garden at Iona House. We have planted 6 rows of berries (thornless blackberries and raspberries), corn, pumpkins, summer veggies, and much more. The table grapes are ripe, the peaches are almost ripe, and the apple trees are loaded for the fall. The garden is now mostly covered with wood chips now. It’s an increasingly wonderful place to be. We are so grateful, especially for the Hudak family and the others who are regular volunteers in the garden.

One of the joyful things about the garden is the addition of a GIANT swing. It is approximately 35 feet tall. Micah, one of our residents, was confident enough to hoist himself up into the tree in order to install it while remaining in a safety harness. The kids were all excitedly watching the action while the rest of us were watching a little nervously as Micah worked up in the tree to attach it with very large bolts.

The swing allows kids the adventure of flying waaaaay up high (as high as 12-15 feet off the ground) with the help of a big push.

It’s also a thrill for people of all ages including a local volunteer, Myrna (in her 80’s), who squealed with delight!

Overall, the garden is full of life and brings so much joy to our guests and community.
