Silence & Solitude
The Iona House Prayer Labyrinth
Silence and solitude is a vital Christian practice - witnessed to especially by the Christian monastic tradition. Every day from 3:00pm-4:30pm we carve out a campus-wide time of silence in which we encourage all guests to practice this discipline. Of course, it goes without saying that silence and solitude can be taken any time during the day or night.
For those who are joining us for the day, we invite you to enter into the unfolding campus rhythm.
A few suggestions for silence & solitude:
Put your phone on silent and put it away (or set an alarm for 4:25pm so that you can make it to Evening Prayer).
Find place of privacy - your room, a bench in the garden, an adirondack chair, a hammock, the prayer chapel, or a prayer hut. Seek to bring yourself to a place of attentiveness to the Lord - light a candle (if in your room) or utilize prayer beads or a simple repeated prayer “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”
Utilize a provided guide to reflection or a journal… or just try to remain open to what the Lord may want to say or impress upon you.
If you feel fidgety, consider walking the prayer trails or using the prayer labyrinth
Practice waiting. It may take an hour before your mind slows down and you can truly be attentive to the Lord. Trust that the Lord can use this time even if it doesn’t immediately seem fruitful. Learning this discipline takes time and practice.
